Post-Offer Employment Testing (POET)

Job-specific physical screening that confirms a candidate can safely perform a role after an offer is made.

About this care

Post-Offer Employment Testing, or POET, is a physical screening performed after a job offer has been extended but before the person starts work. It checks whether a candidate can physically perform the essential demands of the specific job.

A useful POET is built on the actual physical demands of the job. When possible, we base the test on a physical demands analysis of the position, which identifies and measures the lifting, carrying, positioning, and other tasks the role requires. The test is then matched to those demands.

POET is administered consistently for all candidates for the same position and is conducted with attention to ADA and EEOC requirements, which is why it takes place only after a conditional offer has been made. A typical test runs about an hour.

Who it is for

  • Employers hiring for physically demanding roles
  • HR and hiring managers who want to match physical ability to job demands
  • Companies aiming to reduce early work-related injuries and turnover
  • Safety teams standardizing how candidates are screened
  • Employers in manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, and similar fields
  • Organizations that have completed or want a physical demands analysis of a role

What to expect

  1. 1

The test is built around the documented physical demands of the specific job.

  2. 2

It is offered only after a conditional job offer has been made.

  3. 3

The candidate completes measured tasks such as lifting, carrying, and positioning relevant to the role.

  4. 4

We observe and record performance against the job's demands.

  5. 5

We provide the employer a clear result indicating whether the candidate met the tested demands.

Common questions

When can POET be administered?

Only after a conditional job offer has been made. This timing helps keep testing consistent with ADA and EEOC requirements.

How long does the test take?

Most tests take about an hour, depending on the physical demands of the job.

Do you need a job description before testing?

A job description or a physical demands analysis makes the test more accurate, since the screening is matched to the actual demands of the role.
