Running Assessment and Custom Orthotics
A close look at how you run and the support your feet need to keep you moving.
About this care
A running assessment is a detailed look at how your body moves when you run. We record you running on a treadmill from several angles, then review the footage in slow motion. This lets us see things that happen too fast for the eye to catch, like how your foot lands, your stride length, your posture, and how your hips, knees, and ankles work together with each step.
We pair the video with a hands-on exam of your strength, flexibility, and movement. The goal is to understand what may be contributing to your pain or holding back your running, then turn that into a clear plan built around your goals.
For some runners, part of that plan is custom foot orthotics. These are shoe inserts made specifically for your feet, based on a mold or scan and sent to a lab for fabrication. They are designed to support your arch, help your foot and leg line up better, and spread out pressure as you move. Because your feet are the foundation for your knees, hips, and back, small changes there can make a difference further up the chain.

What to expect
- 1
We start with a conversation about your running history, your goals, and any pain or past injuries.
- 2
We check your strength, flexibility, and how your joints move, especially through your feet, ankles, hips, and core.
- 3
You run on a treadmill while we record video from multiple angles, then review it together in slow motion.
- 4
We explain what we see in plain terms and connect it to anything that may be causing pain or limiting you.
- 5
If orthotics make sense for you, we take a mold or scan of your feet so a lab can build inserts matched to your shape and needs.
How it can help
Common questions
Do I have to be an injured runner to get a running assessment?
No. Many runners come in while healthy to fine-tune their form, sort out a nagging issue, or prepare for a race or higher mileage. The assessment is useful whether you are in pain or simply want to run more comfortably.
What is the difference between custom orthotics and store inserts?
Store inserts come in standard shapes and sizes. Custom orthotics are made from a mold or scan of your own feet and built to address what we find in your exam and gait analysis. Not everyone needs custom orthotics, and we will only recommend them if they fit your situation.
What should I bring or wear to my appointment?
Wear comfortable running clothes and bring the shoes you usually run in. If you have more than one pair, bringing them helps us see how your footwear affects your stride.
